Using krill in angling products, whether as bait, additives, or fish feeds, is fundamentally counterproductive for anyone who cares about the long-term health of fish stocks and marine ecosystems.
Krill are the cornerstone of ocean food webs, supporting everything from juvenile fish to seabirds, whales, and apex predators. Removing vast amounts of krill disrupts the delicate balance of marine ecosystems, directly undermining the very fisheries anglers depend upon.
The paradox of using krill-based products in recreational angling is stark: while we cast lines hoping for healthy, thriving fish populations, krill harvesting systematically weakens these populations by starving the food chain from the bottom up. It’s an unsustainable practice with clear, measurable impacts, including declining fish health, lower survival rates, and ultimately, fewer fish to catch.
If we truly value sustainable angling and vibrant seas, it’s time to rethink our use and production of krill-based products.
Introducing ‘Krill Free’, an ambitious new campaign led by YourAnglingVoice in partnership with Gobble Bait. Our mission is simple but powerful: remove krill-based products from angling shelves to protect marine ecosystems and secure healthy fish populations for future generations.
How do brands get involved?
We invite manufacturers in the angling sector to join us by becoming ‘Krill Free Certified’. Brands can start this journey by emailing [email protected]. Certification involves submitting product samples for verification and signing an official declaration confirming the absence of krill across their entire product line. Successful brands gain the right to proudly display the ‘Krill Free’ logo on their products and promotional materials, immediately positioning themselves as leaders in sustainable angling practices.
For those brands still using krill, this certification is a collaborative journey. YourAnglingVoice, Gobble Bait, and future campaign partners will offer expertise and practical support to help manufacturers transition effectively towards environmentally sound alternatives. By facilitating knowledge sharing within the industry, we aim to collectively enhance the affordability and availability of sustainable replacements.
What can I do as a consumer to support this campaign?
Consumers play a vital role in the success of ‘Krill Free’. Anglers and fishery owners are encouraged to sign our Krill Free pledge, committing to avoiding krill-based products and actively seeking out certified alternatives. We will support consumer engagement through detailed articles and case studies that highlight the devastating impact of mass krill extraction on ocean biodiversity. Early adopting brands will benefit from direct marketing initiatives, including dedicated communications to our growing community of environmentally conscious anglers.
How will we know the campaign has worked?
Our targets are ambitious and measurable. Within the first year, we aim for 50% of tackle shops to pledge against stocking krill-based products. Within three years, our goal is the complete removal of krill from all bait products in the UK, before taking this important movement international and beyond just the angling industry. Success will ultimately be measured by significant global reductions in krill extraction, with our vision firmly set on a future without any commercial krill fishery.
Gobble Bait, our launch partner, brings invaluable industry insight and practical experience, having successfully utilised alternatives to krill-based ingredients themselves. We actively invite additional partners, whether environmental NGOs, media outlets, or industry stakeholders, to collaborate by reaching out via [email protected].
Together, the angling industry can be the catalyst to a world without krill extraction, protecting our oceans, and ensuring thriving marine ecosystems for generations to come.
